SHREVEPORT, La. - SUMMIT FastNews - Mother Nature threw nothing but curve balls and sinkers at the IHRA racers competing in the World Finals at Red River Raceway Friday. The curve balls came in the form of unexpected rain, just before the start of competition for the day and again several times throughout the day. The sinker came when a heavy downpour just before the first qualifying session for the Top Fuel competitors washed out the rest of the day.
With the exception of Top Fuel, all Sportsman and Professional racers got one shot at the new Red River Raceway racing surface Friday and Shannon Jenkins, Angelo Alesci, Von Smith, and Dave Price ended up atop their respective Professional category ladders after one qualifying session.
Jenkins' 6.467 second, 218.30 mph effort easily capped the Pro Modified order, with only Quain Stott and Fred Hahn also able to make runs in the 6.40s. Points leader Scotty Cannon missed the setup and qualified well down in the field.
Alesci shocked the rest of the Pro Stock field by posting a 6.717 second, 205.76 mph effort. Stewart Evans qualified second, well back at 6.768.
In Alcohol Funny Car, the top two qualifiers broke into the five-second range, Smith at 5.976 seconds, 236.38 mph, and Mark Thomas at 5.998 and 233.12.
In Super Eliminator, Price edged Angela Sicilia for the top spot, his 6.236 at 218.72 enough to nudge Sicilia's 6.270 at 215.07 off the top of the ladder.
Qualifying will resume with two more rounds of qualifying Saturday, including the Sunoco Pro Stock Shootout and the Holley Rod Class Finals, and the Saturday night "Night of Fire." Results provided by the FastNews Network, courtesy of Summit Racing Equipment ** http://www.summitracing.com/ **
