Phenix City, Ala. (Pre Race) - This weekend Phenix City, Ala. will be the sight of the second 'Trucks Only' event of the 2000 racing season. The Phenix City Motorsports Park will play host to over ten professional Pro Stock Truck drivers and teams who will compete against each other in the hopes of taking home part of the $15,000 purse.
"I think the fans in Phenix City are going to be treated to some good side-by-side racing this weekend," said Brain Self, driver of the Roof-Tec Chevrolet. "There are some real good teams coming to this event. I think it will be a good show, with some very close racing.
"These special races are a good deal for us. With this six-week break in the action we have to take advantage of every opportunity to we have to stay sharp. For me it will help to keep me from getting rusty, and stay practiced on the tree.
"It is also a good opportunity to test. Since this is a non-points event, this weekend you will see this Roof-Tec team throw everything we have at our truck. It will be a good place to test. You can test all you want alone, but there is nothing like side-by-side racing to really see how you are doing.
"Don't get me wrong the testing is just a plus. When you have teams of this caliber competing for $15,000 in prize money, well that's when the gloves come off and we get to racing."
Also scheduled to appear at Saturdays event is Greg Stanfield and Bart Price of the DBP Enterprises Team. Jeff Naiser, who is the driver of the second truck in the Roof-Tec racing team. Don Smith's Texas Harley Davidson Team. Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevy S-10. Scott Tidwell, driver of the CBI Performance Warehouse Pro Stock Truck and Jose Maldonado, driver of the Pit-Stop Chevy S-10.
"The last time I was in Phenix City, I think I was three years old," said Mark Whisnant. "My Dad (Reid Whisnant, former Pro Stock racer) used to race there back when I was a kid. Back then they would race in Phenix City every weekend for bragging rights and cash. This weekend should be a lot like that. There are some good racers coming to this event, so the racing will be very competitive. This part of the country loves racing so I'm sure there will be a large crowd. We plan on going and selling a few T-shirts, meeting the fans, having some fun, and leaving with the cash. Just like my Dad used to do."
The first round of qualifying will begin at 7:00 PM, with Round 2 starting at 9:00 PM on Saturday July 22. Eliminations will take place on Sunday July 23 at 1:30 PM.
