DINWIDDIE, VA - The CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open at Virginia Motorsports Park has been billed as drag racing's official "Cabin Fever Reliever" and from the looks of the steadily growing pre-entry list, numerous drag racers have been hit with the condition. This test session, which will be held March 8 - 11 in Dinwiddie, Va., is already bursting at the seams with committed participation of more than 50 entries.
The Pro Modified division leads the push with 28 entries ranging from top stalwarts such as nitrous frontrunners Steve Vick, Ed Hoover, Mike Castellana, Shannon Jenkins, Harold Martin, Ronnie Hood, Steve Cossis and Dale Brinsfield. The supercharged contingent will be represented, as Johnny Rocca's new hired gun Paul Athey will make the trek as well as Alan Pittman in the Westbrook Motorsports 1941 Willys, Chip King's Avenger, Tommy Mauney in Roy Singleton's Willys and Wayne Torkelson's classic Ford.
The Pro Stock division is gaining steam, as World Champion Jon Yoak will make his debut with his Jerry Haas Mustang. Chevrolet front-runner John Montecalvo will debut his brand-new Cavalier as well. Tom Lee, Jerry Yeoman, Chris Holbrook, Angelo Alesci, Gene Wilson and John Konigshofer are among the IHRA regulars pre-entered.
The Funny car division will also bring a healthy amount of participation and the front-runner will be the Ethanol-sponsored entry of Mark Thomas, who will be testing the waters with Jim Lape serving as the new crewchief. Laurie Cannister is also pre-entered and will reportedly use the event to attain her license. Other entries include the CompetitionPlus.com-sponsored flopper of John Vouros, the Mitel entry of Terry McMillan, Dave Rowe in Paul Femino's Boston Stock Exchange Cutlass and Gerry Thalacker's N2B Speed Turbine Cat Boats entry.
The two-wheeled Screamin Eagle Nitro Harleys will also take part and among those pre-entered are defending IHRA World Champion Jay Turner as well as Jim McClure and Swede Stan Verheijen.
The CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open, a pre-season testing session held at Virginia Motorsports Park, in Dinwiddie, VA, March 8-12, 2001, is open to the public, for ticket information call VMP at (804) 862-3174.
