IHRA returns to Norwalk for rain-delayed World Nationals
NORWALK, Ohio -- When IHRA teams return to Norwalk Raceway Park this Saturday (Sept. 13) to finish the rain-delayed Prolong Super Lubricants / Ohio Lottery World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs, it'll be like nothing IHRA fans in north central Ohio have ever witnessed. Eliminations will be held under the lights. Get ready for a dose of nighttime nitro thunder. Four professional category champions will be crowned, as well as eight sportsman class winners when the Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series returns to promoter Bill Bader's immaculate quarter-mile facility. Shirley Muldowney, the race's defending champion, leads the Top Fuel contingent as top qualifier. Muldowney, driving the Action Collectables dragster, set the pace with a 4.895 second, 296.34 mile per hour effort. Defending Snap-on Tools World Champion Doug Herbert is second with a 4.907, 298.80; Series points leader Paul Romine, a recent winner at the All Pro Bumper-to-Bumper / Prolong Super Lubricants Autumn Chase Nationals, is fourth at 4.973, 286.98. Pro Stock points leader Floyd Cheek was fastest in his division and will face championship contender and 16th qualifier Richie Stevens in what should be an exciting first round. John Montecalvo, David Jenkins, Doug Kirk and Tim Nabors complete the top five qualifiers. Red hot 1941 Willys driver Shannon Jenkins, winner of the last two races -- the Northern Nationals and Autumn Chase Nationals -- was the top qualifier in Pro Modified with a 6.471, 209.20. Close behind the Tuscaloosa, Ala. driver are title contenders Rickie Smith (6.488, 213.21) and Tommy Mauney (6.494, 214.48) in second and third positions. Jim Sickles of Caledonia, N.Y. holds the top spot in Alcohol Funny Car. World Championship contenders Von Smith, Mark Thomas and Jimmy Rector, who leads the current point standings in the division, are all top-five qualifiers. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and all drivers will be afforded a session of time runs prior to eliminations, which begin at 4 p.m. The race will conclude under the lights. In addition to the 12 scheduled IHRA classes of competition, exhibition runs are scheduled for two 300 mile per hour jet dragsters, as well as the awesome 36,000-horsepowered jet Kenworth truck of Bob Motz. The race is scheduled to be televised tape-delay by ESPN2 on Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m., and again on Oct. 6 at 1:30 a.m. Sportsman coverage will be shown Oct. 3 at 10 p.m., and again on Oct. 6 at 1 a.m. Reserved seats are available.
