World Nationals victory important for IHRA title seekers
NORWALK, Ohio -- At Norwalk Raceway Park the chase for IHRA Snap-on Tools World Championships gets serious. There'll be no need for any added drama at the 20th annual Prolong Super Lubricants / Ohio Lottery World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs, Aug. 21-24. Drivers in contention for Top Fuel, Pro Modified, Pro Stock and Alcohol Funny Car world championships will be top form. One needs to look no further than last season's event to recognize the importance of this race, the sixth of eight national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series, in determining IHRA Snap-on World Champions. Three of four IHRA Snap-on World Champions advanced to the final round of the World Nationals last season. Top Fuel champ Doug Herbert finished runner-up to Shirley Muldowney, Jon Yoak was runner-up to Robert Patrick in Pro Stock, and Von Smith was runner-up to Mert Littlefield in Alcohol Funny Car. For each of those drivers their World Nationals finish was very important in claiming their respective Snap-on World Championships. The Snap-on championship battlefield features some new and familiar faces this season. In Top Fuel, Shirley Muldowney and Paul Romine have been at war all season long, trading points punches at every race on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Add in the predictable late season charge of four-time and defending IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Doug Herbert, and the Prolong / Ohio Lottery World Nationals presented by Ethanol will be one to remember. Contenders in Pro Stock include Tim Nabors, Richie Stevens, Floyd Cheek and Angelo Alesci. With Robert Patrick's absence from the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Series in 1997, the World Nationals field is wide open for a new winner in Pro Stock. -MORE- -2- Shannon Jenkins is the defending race winner in Pro Modified, and used the race as an impetus to finish second in the IHRA Snap-on Tools championship standings one year ago. However, this season Jenkins is out of the title picture, based on two races where he failed to qualify. Pro Mod title chasers this season include Tommy Mauney and Rickie Smith. Both should be in top form at the Prolong / Ohio Lottery World Nationals presented by Ethanol. In Alcohol Funny Car, Von Smith, Jimmy Rector, Scott Weis and Mark Thomas are the major players for the crown and will top the list of World Nationals favorites in this class. Special exhibition performances will be made by two jet dragsters, the Hurst Hemi Under Glass wheelstander and the awesome jet Kenworth of Bob Motz. Eight classes of sportsman competition will complete the event. Norwalk Raceway Park is located on State Route 18, near the town of Norwalk. To get there take Exit 7 off Ohio Turnpike, then 4.2 miles on U.S. 250, then .6 miles east, then .7 miles south on Gallop, then 1.2 miles south on Old State Road, then 2.5 miles east on State Route 18 (east of U.S. 20).
