Spiering's Back, and Takes The Road Warrior III To Quarter Finals
Norwalk, Ohio - After what has appeared to be a long dry spell in IHRA Pro Modified competition for Carl Spiering and the Persico Bros. they qualified their Cutler-Hammer and Pace American Road Warrior III '57 Chevy Supercharged entry at the World Nationals. Just to qualify has been something of a personal feat for Spiering and Persico as the team was unsuccessful in qualifying for the World Nationals in their previous two attempts.
The weather was similar to what the team had faced at the last two events they competed in and have won, so they had a small amount of data to work with. The first qualifying pass of the day (6.39 secs) put the team in the program for the time being, but they knew it wasn't going to be enough. When the second session of qualifying came around, the weather conditions improved slightly, giving the team the feeling that this was possibly their only chance to make the field. Carl drove the car to a qualifying attempt of 6.35 seconds, in turn was good enough to stay in the field, and subsequent to the fourth session he was qualified in the 15th position. After looking at the field, Spiering and Persico were only one of five supercharged entries to qualify in a 16-car field; the remainders of spots were filled by nitrous oxide competitors.
Carl would have to face #2 qualifier, Quain Stott, in the first round of competition. Stott, undoubtedly drives one of the fastest nitrous Pro Mods on the planet and had been running consistently in the 6.20's all weekend. The tree came down and Carl had the reaction time advantage, but Stott had the proven power, then Stott had some tire shake and Spiering's run was off the pace but it was Spiering that took the win with a 6.44 elapsed time to a losing 6.58.
The quarterfinals saw The Big Dog paired against "Tricky" Ricky Smith, a pioneer in the sport. Smith lit both staging lights quickly, and then Spiering pulled in and flickered the staging lights on then off. When this happens and your competitor is already fully staged it is an automatic disqualification. A tough break for the Spiering and Persico team, but overall the weekend was a great success for them having continued their qualifying and winning streak.
"We are really just so happy to be in the program with this Cutler-Hammer and Pace American race car, that to go rounds would be a bonus for us. I would also like to thank the people who are here from Pace and Cutler-Hammer for making the trip to Norwalk to enjoy the races," replied Spiering before first round of competition.
