Angelo Alesci Sheds Norwalk "Monkey", Wins Pro Stock
NORWALK, OH-- Angelo Alesci is a very superstitious person and as a result, he always believed for some reason that he was jinxed at his home track Norwalk Raceway Park. At the 1998 World Nationals, he bodyslammed the monkey. The veteran Pro Stock driver wheeled his Sonny's Automotive powered, 1997 Monte Carlo past an impressive Carl Holbrook in the final.
"We broke our bad streak finally," explained Alesci. "We've never won here before. This was an emotional win for us. Especially the final because it was the toughest for me. It was tough knowing that I was racing someone lightning quick on the tree and that could run the numbers."
Alesci had a tough stroke of luck in qualifying in the early going. He seemed to be mired in 6.83s during the early sessions, but flexed his muscles during the final session and it paid off. Angelo clicked off a 6.774/203.89 that secured the fifth spot. He mathematically waded past names such as Dwayne Rice, John Montecalvo and Ron Miller to make it to the final.
The final round saw Alesci overcome underdog status and remain cool amidst pressure. Holbrook tripped the redlight and that allowed Alesci to win with a 6.79/204.40. This marked Angelo's fourth career victory.
