NORWALK, Ohio. (Aug. 25, 2000) - It was quite a moment for IHRA.com Funny Car pilot Mark Thomas during Friday's final qualifying session for the IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series Mopar Parts World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway Park. The four-time IHRA Funny Car champion had his named etched in the history books as Norwalk Raceway Park unveiled the Mark Thomas grandstand.
"This has to be one of the greatest moments of my racing career," said a surprised and emotional Thomas, "I can't believe this. It's hard to put into words the appreciation and love I have for everyone here at Norwalk Raceway Park."
As usual, Thomas also had qualifying business to tend to. The Ethanol/Mopar Parts Dodge Avenger took the 14th position after suffering clutch problems in his final effort. Thomas ran a 6.091-second elapsed time at 229.63.
"We've kind of struggled this weekend," said the defending race champion. "We are in the show, and I think we have a shot at winning our second straight.
Laurie Cannister, driver of the Mopar-powered Nicorette Top Outlaw dragster, barely missed the No. 1 qualifying position with an impressive 6.126/222.40 combination. The current Pro Outlaw points leader was only .005 behind top-qualifier Mike Decker.
"That was a great run," said Cannister, the 1999 rookie of the year. "The car was really smooth and we're producing a lot of horsepower. We have already gained three points on (second place) Mick Snyder this weekend, I'm hoping we can solidify our position."
