Norwalk, Ohio - John Mancuso's Screamin' Eagle Top Fuel Harley Davidson team was bound for glory at the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway Park and a 6.50/216 was cause enough for many to suspect the first-ever 6.4-second was nearby. The leading contender for the 1999 IHRA World Championship, Mancuso faced few problems through the weekend's qualifying rounds. His superb efforts landed him in the finals against Jay Turner.
Top Fuel Harley competitors did not run Thursday qualifying sessions due to rain. But by Friday, the contingent was more than ready to make up for that. Mancuso took the first round seriously, smoking the tire on the launch, but was able to recover and post a 7.379/198.82 run, not good enough for a qualifying position.
Mancuso was able to improve with a near perfect pass in round two of qualifying, with a 6.610/200.92 mph and taking over the number one spot on the ladder. His 6.635/202.76 marks could not be bettered. Mancuso stood in first place at the beginning of competition on Sunday, set to face Allen Peterson for the first round.
Peterson was able to get the advantage from the start in the, but slowed and Mancuso easily took a win on a 6.646/206.89 run. When Ray Price took the stage with him in round two, he could not know he would be on the losing end of two new records. Mancuso posted the quickest and fastest Top Fuel Harley pass ever with an astounding 6.508/216.93. This incredible victory set him up against the number two qualifier on the weekend, Jay Turner.
Mancuso had the starting line snatched out from under him by Turner who dominated the final round. Mancuso's 6.707/198.15 was well off his weekend's numbers, taking second place in the event.
Mancuso and the IHRA/Screamin' Eagle Top Fuel Harley team will continue their quest for another championship at the IHRA PARTS PRO North American Nationals in Epping, NH., September 10-12. Mancuso, along with each Top Fuel Harley contestant will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This event will be televised with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA Drag Review Magazine.
