Del Worsham and Mike Ashley to match race at IHRA World Finals in Rockingham
IHRA fans will get a taste of how the NHRA does Funny Car at the rescheduled IHRA World Finals, slated for Oct. 27-30 at Rockingham Dragway.
Del Worsham and Mike Ashley, two of the stronger drivers in the NHRA's Nitro Funny Car class, will square off in a best two-of-three match race at the fabled North Carolina speedway.
Worsham, currently eighth in the Powerade NHRA World Championship points standings, will bring his red CSK Nitro Funny Car to The Rock to lock horns with Ashley's SKULL GEAR/Torco Race Fuels entry. The first of three heats will take place Friday and the match will conclude Saturday.
In addition to the match race, Ashley will also compete in the Torco Pro Mod class in his Shelby GT500E while Worsham will drive his "Blue Max" in exhibition runs during the weekend.
Veteran Alcohol Funny Car driver Terry McMillen, who has earned his name in his Amalie Oil/Torco Race Fuels-backed InstiGator Funny Car, will also make his Top Fuel debut in Rockingham with veteran Mark Oswald turning the wrenches on McMillen's Torco Race Fuels dragster.
Evan Knoll, the president and owner of Torco Race Fuels, SKULL GEAR and Knoll Gas, will be on hand at the event in Rockingham to celebrate the successful 2005 season. Knoll will throw the party to end all parties in Rockingham, a three-day feast that will feed anywhere from three to five thousand racers and their families. As Knoll put it, "I want to throw a party that resembles the tremendous season we have had here at Torco Race Fuels."
Knoll has also committed to supplying a free drum of Torco Pro Nitro to every Top Fuel entry at the IHRA World Finals as well.
"These guys have poured their hearts and souls into this class this year," Knoll said of the Top Fuel drivers. "This is my way of saying 'Thank you' to them."
"I can't stress enough how much we appreciate everything Evan Knoll and his team at Torco have done for us here at IHRA," IHRA President Aaron Polburn said. "Every time he does something tremendous that benefits the entire organization, and drag racing in general, I am at a loss for words how to thank him. Then he does something else and, again, I don't know what to say. So I guess I should just say 'thanks' to him for being such a positive influence on this sport."
