Ron Capps Set to Compete at Goodguys 8th Pomona Nitro Nationals
Pomona Raceway, Pomona, CA -- Not one to sit around the house on off weekends, 39 year old Funny Car racer Ron Capps of Carlsbad, CA will don his fire suit and compete in a nostalgia-style 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Funny Car at the Goodguys 8th Nitro Nationals, August 5-7 at Pomona Raceway. The Goodguys Nitro Nationals will mark the first time Capps has competed in a Funny Car outside of the prestigious NHRA/PowerAde series where his day job is driver of the 330mph Brut cologne-sponsored Dodge Stratus Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing.
The event is the third stop of the five-race Goodguys West Coast Nostalgia Drag Racing Series and will feature over 400 nostalgia drag racers competing in fourteen classes including 250mph front engined top fuel dragsters, nitro burning nostalgia Funny Cars, Altereds, Gassers and gear-grinding Hot Rods & Street Machines. The event also includes a rod & custom "show & shine" as well as a bustling manufacturer's midway and a swap meet & cars for sale corral. Celebrity appearances by Southern California Funny Car legend Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen and veteran drag racing announcer and television anchor Dave McClelland are scheduled as well.
Capps, currently in 4th place in NHRA/PowerAde series points is looking forward to his trip back in time. "I grew up in southern California hanging over the fence at tracks like Orange County Raceway, Irwindale and all the others watching the top Funny Cars of the day compete. My childhood heroes were Mongoose & Snake, Ed "The Ace" McCulloch (Capps' crew chief on the Brut car), Don Schumacher and the "Wonder Wagon", and "Jungle Jim" Lieberman. When the opportunity to drive a nostalgic Funny Car like the ones I saw as a kid came up, I jumped at the chance."
Capps credits his alliance with Dodge and Mopar Performance and his boss -- Don Schumacher for getting the ride in Jeff Gaynor's 1970 Barracuda. "The guys at Mopar Performance agreed to sponsor the car for this race and Don gave me the green light to drive another team's race car on an off weekend. I'm stoked. I can't wait to do a long smoky burnout and give the fans a little taste of how it used to be," he said.
The Goodguys have been staging nostalgia-style vintage drag races since 1989 with front engined top fuel dragsters grabbing most of the attention. In 2004, Goodguys added the popular nostalgia Funny Cars giving fans of the vintage sport a double dose of ear-splitting nitro burning competition. At least 12 nostalgia Funny Cars are expected to qualify for the 8 car field including current Goodguys points leader and class record holder Dan Horan Jr. of Sylmar, CA who races a 1966 Ford Mustang bodied entry. Horan holds the class elapsed time record at 6.14 seconds. Larry Petit's "Crazy Horse" 1971 Ford Mustang of Hawthorne, CA holds the class speed record at 236mph.
Qualifying for the Goodguys 8th Nitro Nationals is scheduled for Friday and Saturday August 5 & 6 with special 8pm nighttime qualifying both evenings for the Nostalgia Top Fuel and Nostalgia Funny Cars and other professional categories. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, August 7 beginning at 10am.
Adult general admission is $25 per day, children ages 7-12 $10 per day. Gates open 8am daily. For additional information please visit www.good-guys.com. Pomona Raceway is located at Fairplex in Pomona. For directions to the racetrack, please visit www.fairplex.com
