LEICESTER, NY-- Two of New York’s finest are looking for their first national event victory and may very well achieve the feat at this weekend’s IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals. Both John Montecalvo and Mike Castellana are anxiously awaiting the day that they can open the champagne at the conclusion of racing. Be not deceived, these guys have all the weapons to perform the feat. They just need the approving nod of fate to achieve the feat.

Montecalvo, who lives in Center Moriches, NY., has been on a tear this year. The Citgo-sponsored, Pro Stock driver has developed status as having the quickest Chevrolet in the Pro Stock division. He has qualified on the pole at two events this season (Holley Spring Nationals and Amalie Oil Summer Nationals) and has went to the semi-finals once. At this point in the season, he has been the only Chevrolet to make it to the final four round of competition. He qualified in the top spot at last year’s CARQUEST Empire Nationals and finished as the event’s quarter-finalist.

Castellana, who resides in Westbury, NY., has had a season of mixed emotions. He debuted a new, Tim McAmis-built, 1957 Chevy at the beginning of the season and has only qualified at one IHRA national event thus far this season, the Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, NC. The supermarket chain owner carries the livery of his Western Beef company on the side of the immaculate shoebox, which has reached semi-finalist status in NMCA competition. He made the program in last season’s CARQUEST Empire Nationals as the 13th seeded Pro Modified and dropped a tough encounter opposite Quain Stott in the first round.

Montecalvo currently stands in the fifth position of the Pro Stock points standings and hopes to break the Ford stronghold on the first four spots. On the other hand, Castellana seeks a spot in the top ten and could secure a spot with a late rounds finish at Leicester.

Qualifying for the fifth stop on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Drag Racing Series in Leicester begins on Friday with two sessions and followed by two more on Saturday. Final eliminations begin on Sunday.
