Quick Results of Day One of the 1997 MIR Pro Challenge event. Full results to follow.

Tricky Rickie Smith took his '63 Corvette split window Pro Mod match racer to a two-wins-to-one match race victory over Tommy Gray in the Undertaker '38 Chevy. In doing so, Smith established new personal best times of 6.524 seconds at 212.29 mph. Smith backed up the run with a 6.53 at 211. Gray suffered clutch problems and other maladies, including a near 'blowover' in his final time run before the match--the car hit every bit of a 45 degree angle! Best times for the Undertaker were 6.70s.

The Northeast Pro Shootout Association (outlaw Pro Stocks, Pro Mods, and Top Sportsmen) put on a super three-round qualifying show with final eliminations to occur Sunday. Leading the 16 car qualified field is Vinnie Budano, in the Scott Shafiroff Trans Am. Budano recorded the first 6.70-second pass in NPSA history with a superb 6.79 second, 203 mph pole setter.

MIR's wild FRANTIC FOUR doorslammers and FRANTIC FOUR dragsters made a smash debut. After three rounds of qualifying, Bobby Parlett leads the FF/Dragster field with a 6.91 at 196 mph. Tommy Howes leads the FF/Doorslammer field with his best-ever run, a 6.62 at 211 mph. Eliminations will occur Sunday.

Joe Douthit's "California Smokey" Jet Dragster put on a great show with three good runs and a great fire show. The touring pro recorded best times of 5.47 seconds at 290 mph. Joe and family will return Sunday.

Sunday also brings Randy Delano's outstanding '63 Corvette split window nitrous oxide injected Pro Mod car taking on Johnny Rocca's 'Tin Indian' '33 Willys supercharged Pro Mod machine. This will be the very last race for the Tin Indian as Rocca will debut his wild '50 Merc Pro Mod in three weeks! Rocca is fresh off a winter tour of Australia where he went toe-to-toe with the best that continent had to offer.

Come out on this projected 65 degree afternoon to enjoy day two of the biggest single opening special event in the 36 year history of MIR! Gates will open at 10 am; eliminations will begin at 1pm.
