Romine sets new IHRA elapsed time record, but loses in round one at CARQUEST Northern Nationals

STANTON, MI (August 2, 1998)-- The first round pairing of IHRA Top Fuel world champion Paul Romine and current points leader Tommy Johnson, Jr. was a classic pairing that lived up to its billing.

With a win Romine would take the points lead, but a loss would extend Johnson, Jr.'s lead. After unordinary staging by Johnson Jr., Romine and Johnson, Jr. each left the starting line late, Romine with a later .545 to .507. At the finish line the CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster crossed the stripe with an IHRA elapsed time record of 4.765/292.33, but lost to Johnson, Jr.'s slower 4.772/297.68 in the quickest side-by-side drag race in IHRA history.

"It was the drag race everyone expected and unfortunately we came out on the losing end," Romine said. "It's tough to set a record and lose, but it's just part of the sport and we'll just have to wait and get them at Norwalk."

Despite the lose, Romine didn't lose much ground on Johnson, Jr. in the IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing point standings. Romine's world record gained him additional points while Johnson, Jr. lost in round two to eventual event winner Pat Dakin, who re-set Romine's ET record in the final with a 4.753.

The next event for Romine and the CARQUEST team will the Prolong Super Lubricants World Nationals, August 28-30, at Norwalk Raceway Park, Norwalk, Ohio.
