IRONHORSE FAILS TO QUALIFY AT NORTHERN NATIONALS

STANTON, MI (August 1, 1998) - In a scene reminiscent of last season's frustration, Johnny Rocca failed to qualify for the second consecutive time after enjoying one of the finest moments of his season, a qualifying effort at the Summer Nationals in Cordova, Illinois. The veteran Pro Modified driver from Leesburg, Virginia didn't gain any comfort in knowing that his DNQ (Did Not Qualify) effort was his first outing under a rules change that reduced the permitted overdrive of supercharged entries.

"Not much you can say to make a man feel better at a time like this," explained Rocca in a post race press interview. "I can't say that I am happy with the rules change and I am not going to sit here and whine like a baby. I'm just going to have come back out with both guns blazing next time I run and that will be Norwalk."

Creating horsepower didn't appear to be a problem for Rocca. Bonding it was the Mid-Michigan Motorplex asphalt was another. On four consecutive runs, Rocca rattled the tires and was forced to lift early with a 6.710/207.62 best.
