Hometown favorite Alvey among Holley Nationals winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Local favorite Jeremy Alvey drove his dragster to an emotional victory in Sunday's Modified final at the 2nd annual Holley Nationals. The race was the fifth of nine national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Alvey, an 18-year-old college student from the nearby Valley Station community, ran 5.224 seconds at 132.39 miles per hour to take the win over veteran drag racer Wayne Allison of Pacolet Mills, S.C. It was the first IHRA national event win for Alvey, as well as his first career drag racing victory. The win was especially sweet because it was Alvey's first race since being seriously injured one year ago in a crash at the same track. "This is really unbelievable," said Alvey, who barrell-rolled his dragster last year when a left rear tire exploded as he crossed the finish line. "We decided to make our comeback at this race and everything just seemed to click all weekend long. The car stayed consistent and I was able to keep my concentration on the tree. I couldn't think of a better way to get my first win -- here at my home track in front of my family, friends and neighbors." Kevin Hamstra used a holeshot to defeat Bruce Litton in the API/Spitzer Quick-8 Top Dragster final. Hamstra, of Demotte, Ind., recorded a 4.286 second, 165.52 mile per hour in the final round to beat Litton, who posted a quicker 4.260, 166.94. In Top Dragster competition, Ranburne, Ala.'s Johnny Coefield claimed the win when opponent Tom Callahan left the starting line too early -- the first of three straight final round fouls. Jim Pauckner of Milford, Ohio took the Top Sportsman win over a red-lighting Ronnie Davis. Jim Reynolds of Franklinton, N.C. claimed the Super Stock title, defeating Roger Keeling in a close final round. Mike McGinley of Lebanon, Ind. held off Harold Gault for the Stock victory. Rod category winners included Kevin Scales, Spartanburg, S.C. (Quick Rod); Nick Smallwood, Delbarton, W.Va. (Super Rod); and David Hill, Murfreesboro, Tenn. (Hot Rod). The next IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series event will be the CARQUEST Northern Nationals, Aug. 8-10 at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Stanton, Mich.
