Paul Romine qualified #2 at IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals
LEICESTER, NY (July 11, 1998) -- It took the last Top Fuel car down the New York International Raceway quarter-mile to knock Paul Romine from the top of the qualifying list at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals.
Romine and his 6,000 horsepower machine entered the CARQUEST Night of Fire as the top qualifier with a 5.017/286.01. He improved in the final session of qualifying with NYIR's first four-second Top Fuel run, a 4.997/282.07, but David Bieneman of Royal Oak, Mich. knocked the CARQUEST dragster to second when he recorded a 4.989/283.91.
"I would have loved having the number one position, but second is all right," Romine said. "We really were unsure what to expect from the track this morning because it was so slippery and we got a 5.01 out of it in the opening session. Then we ran a 4.99 tonight so that's two consistent runs we can fine tune tomorrow and hopefully go some rounds."
Paul Romine squares off with fellow Indianapolis native Bruce Litton in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations, schedule to begin at 12 noon. Romine last met Litton in the final at the '97 IHRA World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio where Romine won the race, wrapping up his 1997 IHRA Top Fuel World Championship.
