LEICESTER, NY - Shannon Jenkins has had his fingers crossed for a little bit of his old magic. At the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY., he almost got his wish. With the new rules being set to slow down the supercharged teams Jenkins' nitrous team feel they now have a fighting chance to defend their Pro Mod title that he claimed with an iron fist of dominance.

During the first qualifying session held on Friday Jenkins was able to place run a 6.460/219.35 placing him temporarily in the seventh spot. For the second session, Jenkins and his Viper were able to pick it up quite a bit, running a 6.425/219.72 putting the "Ice Man" the seventh quickest. The third qualifying session was cancelled when rain set in.

For the first round of elimination's Jenkins and his '00 Viper lined up against Mike Castellana's Western Beef '57 Bel Air. Castellana launched and then there was a bang from the engine and Jenkins drove by for the win with a 6.453/219.35.

In the quarter-finals, the defending World Champion took on Pat Moore at the wheel of Ed Steffy's beautiful new '57 Bel Air. Jenkins proved why he's a world champion driver, running a slower 6.464/218.65 to Moore's quicker 0.484 6.443/219.40. Jenkins reaction time won this one for him at starting line, giving him the win margin by 0.005 seconds.

Jenkins took his innovative Viper into the semis for a match against Aussie Troy Critchley. Critchley, at the wheel of a supercharged car has been under scrutiny all day, had what it required to stop Jenkins.

Critchley deep-staged giving him the starting line advantage, which is what it took to defeat the reigning world champ. Jenkins outran Critchley with a 6.474/219.88 to Critchley's slower 6.463/218.87 but still lost by 0.010 seconds.

Shannon "The Ice Man" Jenkins will continue to defend his Pro Mod title at the upcoming Carquest Northern National at the mid Michigan Motorplex on Aug. 4-6.
