Mike Ashley Through Testing, Ready To Deliver In Leicester
LEICESTER, NY. - Mike Ashley has been very cautious this season and with good reason. The 35-year old, mortgage banker from Melville, N.Y., endured one of the most frustrating seasons that a driver could endure last year. That's why, when his first outing this season in Dinwiddie didn't produce the results that he hoped for and subsequent test sessions didn't provide a reprieve, he put things on hold. Now things are right and he can't get to the track quick enough.
The upcoming CARQUEST Empire Nationals should provide the atmosphere that he's longed for, for nearly a decade.
"I'm ready to make our mark in this class once again," explained Ashley. "Drag racing is a tough sport to remain on top of all the time. Just one wrong move and you can slip and it seems like forever until you get back to where you need to be. I think we're more than ready and I'm ready to prove that we are a contender for front-runner status."
Ashley has good reason to feel that way, as he will roll through the gates at New York International Raceway Park loaded for bear. He will have his switches set for "kill" in his Tommy Mauney-built 1963 Corvette and motivation from a Charlie Buck powerplant. Another key factor will be the assistance of Gary Henry, who also serves as the crewchief on points leader Gene Wilson's Pro Stock Cougar. He's also developed a testing alliance with Pro Modified standout Mitch Stott.
This is not all wishful thinking on Ashley's behalf, as he recently set the nitrous doorslammer elapsed time record at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., one of the quickest and fastest tracks on the east coast. The impressive part is that record run was one that he actually lifted early on.
Ashley knows that the time for talking is over and that it's time to deliver.
"You can count on it," explained Ashley. "I'm ready to get down to business. They say that you have to pay your dues in Pro Modified. If that's the case, I've overpaid mine. I'm ready to do what I know I can do."
