Defending champion Millican wins at IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals
Grand Bend, Ontario -- Clay Millican of Team Werner Enterprises/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, won his third IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals Top Fuel title on Sunday at the Grand Bend Motorplex, defeating Grant Flowers of the Amalie Oil team in the finals.
Millican qualified in first place with an elapsed time of 4.790 seconds and a speed of 311.20 mph. In the first round of eliminations, Millican faced number eight qualifier Bobby Lagana, Jr. of Team Twilight Zone. Millican dropped a cylinder during the run, but was still able to clock a 4.833, compared to Lagana, Jr.'s 10.417.
In the second round, Millican faced number five qualifier Jack Ostrander in a very close race. Millican's tires lost traction around the half-track mark, while Ostrander was having traction problems as well. Ostrander held onto the lead by approximately a half-second at the 1000-foot mark, then lost his blower belt, resulting in Millican's victory with an elapsed time of 8.077 compared to Ostrander's 8.091.
After the second round, Team Werner Enterprises/Lehman Racing had troubles with the Top Fuel dragster's ignition system, and had to replace several components before the final round. Millican faced Flowers, the number seven qualifier, in the final round. Flowers lost a few cylinders at the start, and Millican was able to cruise to the finish line with an elapsed time of 4.690 for the victory.
This marks the third time that Millican has won the Mopar Canadian Nationals, as he also won in 2000 and 2002. His win in 2000 was the first-ever Top Fuel victory of his career. Millican holds the Grand Bend Motorplex and Canadian National track records for both Top Fuel elapsed time (4.61 seconds) and speed (318.92 mph), and is also the current leader in the IHRA Top Fuel points standings. This was his second IHRA victory of 2003, and he remains undefeated in IHRA races this year.
"I love the Canadian fans and Grand Bend is the place of our first-ever Top Fuel win, so it is a very special race for our team," said Millican. "We were all really excited to get the win today."
Millican and Team Werner Enterprises/Lehman Racing will race again next weekend at the IHRA ACDelco Nationals in Richmond, Virginia on June 6-8. For more information about Millican and Team Werner Enterprises/Lehman Racing, visit www.lehmanracing.com.
