IHRA World Championship Series resumes at Marion County
LARUE, Ohio -- IHRA performance records may be in jeopardy when the World Championship Series (WCS) returns to the Marion County International Raceway June 28-29. It will be the first IHRA sportsman-only points event held at the quarter-mile facility in four years. The race will be the seventh of 12 WCS events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series.
One of the quickest facilities on the WCS schedule, Marion County International Raceway is one of three quarter-mile facilities used on the 1997 WCS tour. All other tracks on the schedule are 1/8-mile. Record performances will be pending in all eight of IHRA's sportsman categories, but especially in the ultra-fast Top Dragster and Top Sportsman classes.
Top Dragster points leader prior to the President's Cup Nationals in BuddsCreek, Md. (June 22) Glen Hedrick of Wytheville, Va. will be among the top contenders for a win in that division. Others include defending world champion Mike Fuqua, Michael Barclay, Britt Cummings and Brad Jeter, also a regular in IHRA's popular professional category, Pro Modified.
In Top Sportsman, three-year-defending world champion Gary Bingham of Kings Mountain, N.C. will be looking to advance his current points position. The Doug Herbert Performance Parts Pontiac driver is third in the IHRA Snap-on Tools standings, behind leader Steve Splawn and former IHRA champ Ronnie Davis. Other top contenders in the division include Todd Baker, Frank Teague, Jeff Dobbins and Dewayne Silance.
In other categories, North Carolina driver Tim Sloan leads the pack in Modified, while Pat Malloy holds a slim margin in Quick Rod. Rusty Cook and defending champ Steve Furr have a tight battle brewing in Super Rod, while B.D. Parker and John Furr wrestle for the Hot Rod points lead. Super Stock defending champ Anthony Bertozzi of Richmond, Va. will look to increase his lead, while Harold Gault, Paul Crowe and Randall Campbell are top Stock Eliminator contenders.
The track is located in north central Ohio, just over two miles south of state route 95 on state route 37 in LaRue.
