Larry Snyder Announces Retirement At The Conclusion Of 1999 Season
EPPING, NH - He's pondered the decision for most of the season, but opted to make it official at the IHRA Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, N.H. The current Super Eliminator points leader decided to call it quits at the completion of the 1999 season and devote more time to his family, business and his role as a car owner.
Snyder had to look no further than his household to find a suitable replacement. His son Mick, who competes in Quick Rod eliminator will assume the role that his dad has played for years. This decision is one of mixed emotions for Mick.
"I have some large shoes to fill," explained the second generation racer. "My dad provided me with an excellent example of what being a professional drag racer is all about. I can only hope that I will fare as well as he has."
The soft-spoken patriarch has no regrets.
"This is something that I want to do," explains Snyder. "I don't have to stop driving. I just choose to step back. Mick will do well and I have enough faith in him to say that. Besides, if I get bored with retirement, I can always build a second car and make a two-car team."
Snyder has been relentless in his pursuit of the 1999 championship by posting wins at the Prolong Winter Nationals, Amalie Oil Nationals, Holley Spring Nationals and CARQUEST Northern Nationals. He currently stands as the quickest driver in the Super Eliminator division with a 6.09 elapsed time.
Snyder and the Spitzer Super Eliminator team will pursue their points lead next at the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NC., Sept 24-26. Snyder, along with each Super Eliminator contestant, will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday, another two on Saturday, and final eliminations will begin Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review Magazine.
