Trussell Motorsports Adds Junior Dragster Racer Kelli Bennett To Team, Pro Funny Car Champion Von Smith And Pro Modified Racer Mike Castellana Add Sponsorship Support
SPARTANBURG, SC - IHRA Junior Dragster competitor Kelli Bennett has secured sponsorship for his Y2K season. The 10-year old, fourth grader from Spartanburg, SC., will step up on a higher competitive level as he joins forces with Paul Trussell of Trussell Motorsports. Trussell, who fields a Pro Modified operation for Ed Hoover, stepped forward with major sponsorship on the second-year driver. In his first season, Bennett finished in the Top 10 at Greer Dragway's points standings.
Bennett had lost his sponsorship with Trim Parts, and not only did he replace the lost major backer, but also gained further support from Pro Funny Car champion Von Smith and Pro Modified standout Mike Castellana.
Trussell feels that investing with Kelli goes towards a worthwhile cause.
"Kelli's a good kid," commented Trussell. "I felt bad that he lost his sponsorship and I thought that maybe I could help a little. He's going to be a good professional driver one day and I am just amazed at how good this junior dragster program teaches these kids the fundamentals of the sport."
Smith adds, "I think we aren't so far gone from being kids that we realize just how important that the junior dragster programs are. It's the future of the sport and I love drag racing enough that I feel it is beneficial to invest in."
Castellana has entered into his second season with the team and has no regrets. "We are going to do some new programs with our own team and we plan to incorporate Kelli in them. I think all professional drag racers should invest in a kid. Imagine back to the days when you were a little league baseball player and suppose a professional took the time to work with you or play a simple game of catch. Imagine what kind of impression that would have left on you. Now when we take time with the child fans, imagine the impression that we leave with these kids."
With the new sponsorship, Bennett will step up in terms of performance with a Blockzilla motor from Barr's Competition in Shelby, NC. His new powerplant is expected to produce high-eight second, eighth-mile laps. His first test session will be at the CompetitionPlus.Com Groundhog Warm-up presented by Majesty Homes, February 18-20 in Darlington, SC.
When asked what he thinks about this, Kelli added, "I'm excited and scared. This is fun. I'm getting closer to Paul Romine, one day I'm going to run him."
