Montecalvo Ready To Take Aim On IHRA Pro Stock World Championship, Ground Hog Warm-up Provides First Test
CENTER MORICHES, NY-- This may just be the year that Citgo-sponsored, Pro Stock driver John Montecalvo hits the big time. The asphalt company owner from Center Moriches, N.Y. hopes to become the first New Yorker to win the IHRA Pro Stock World Championship. Based on his 1998 showings, Montecalvo appears to be in the groove towards obtaining his objective.
"We've always been in the running," explained Montecalvo. "My crew always provide me with a car capable of running at the forefront. Fate just sometimes doesn't always agree with us. But, in a situation like that, all one can do is keep plugging away and hoping that you'll hit it right."
The trusty Chevrolet pilot qualified on the pole in three consecutive outings during the months of July and August. He was the number one qualifier at the IHRA Empire Nationals, Northern Nationals and the well publicized, independently contested Mountain Motor Nationals in Budds Creek, Md.
The Citgo Racing team is scheduled to make their testing debut at the upcoming Groundhog Warm-Up in Darlington, S.C., during February 17-20. Though the team has been a consistent qualifier during the year (qualified at every IHRA/Snap-On Tools event in 1998), they have yet to break into the 6.6 second range. Crewchief Billy Wagner expects that to change.
He explains, "We can run with the best of them in this class. Pro Stock has already stepped up to the 6.6 second range and to gain a better edge, we are going to have to catch that mark and possibly jump into the 6.5 arena. It's possible with the ever-increasing technology available to the Pro Stock class. When it happens, we will be right in the thick of it. You can count on that."
