DARLINGTON, SC - From the time he released the clutch, John Montecalvo knew he was on a pass. The veteran asphalt company owner from Center Moriches, NY., had his intuitions confirmed when he blasted out a 6.599/208.76 to become the World's Quickest Pro Stock driver during a test session on Thursday afternoon at Darlington International Dragway.
The Citgo-sponsored driver was on his second pass of a test session when he became the first driver in Pro Stock history to eclipse the mark. His previous run on the Billy Wagner-tuned entry had netted a 6.627/209.
Montecalvo was ecstatic about the run to say the least.
"I just knew that a Chevrolet had to be the first into the 6.50s because of the loyal support of the Chevrolet fans," explained Montecalvo. " I owe a lot to my crew, they made this possible. It's not hard to drive a car that quick when it is prepared by a team comprised of Billy Wagner, Steven Cultrera and Bill Cavello. I have to thank my engine Sonny Leonard and my chassis builder Rick Jones, Autometer and Holley."
Montecalvo continued, "I couldn't have done anything without the support of my employees and everybody back home. I'd also like to thank Citgo for their support."
Wagner, the outspoken tuning wizard who will be leaving the team at the first of the year, had but one thing to say regarding the accomplishment of the team.
He smiled and uttered, "I had to leave them all something to remember me by."
Montecalvo will continue his test session tommorrow at Darlington International Dragway.
