Montecalvo Reaches Quarter-finals At IHRA Holley Spring Nationals
ROCKINGHAM, NC-- Pro Stock racer John Montecalvo wouldn’t mind having a few more weekends like he experienced at the recently completed IHRA Holley Spring Nationals. The Citgo-sponsored driver nailed down the number one qualifying spot and reached the semi-finals of the rain-delayed event in Rockingham, N.C. This marked the finest outing of the 1999 season for the Center Moriches, N.Y.,-based team.
Montecalvo flew the banner for the “Bowtie Brigade” in the Pro Stock division as he posted a 6.741/205.24. His run was the quickest of the round by .05 and was the initial leader. He continued to flex his muscles and steeped up during the cooler conditions of the Friday evening session with a 6.735/204.91 and remained in the top spot.
In the first Saturday session, Montecalvo sat in the number two spot in qualifying for about one minute after a previous driver bumped him down. The Citgo-sponsored driver stormed back to reclaim his top spot during the third session with a 6.712/207.08. He continued his dominance of the Pro Stock qualifying at Rockingham, but failed to improve during the final session. He ran a 6.749/207.08 and claimed the top spot in the program on the strength of his third session lap. Montecalvo was paired against Bob Holzer in the first round of eliminations.
He easily outmuscled Holzer in the first round with a 6.779/204.54. Montecalvo then shot down an upset-minded Doug Kirk, who applied a brief holeshot. The refrigerator-white entry breezed by with a 6.775/204.49.
After a severe thunderstorm halted racing prior to the semi-finals, racing action was resumed on the following day at 10 AM. Montecalvo was then scheduled to face former World Champion Jon Yoak. Yoak outreacted Montecalvo and was able to lead him for the duration of the match. Montecalvo eventually aborted the run when he got out of the groove.
Holzer enjoyed a brief lead out of the gate, but quickly relinquished it as he scored the quickest lap of the round with a 6.779/204.54. Montecalvo continued his bracket racing consistency as he carded a 6.775/204.49 to stop former World Champion Doug Kirk.
The next event for the Citgo team will be the rescheduled IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., on May 8. Montecalvo, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assault on the Darlington International Dragway racing surface for the completion of the first race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. The qualified fields are set and each participant will be afforded a time trial early in the day. Final eliminations are slated to begin that same afternoon.
