Mancuso Fails To Qualify In Rain-shortened Program At Parts Pro North American Nationals
EPPING, NH -- Blame it on the rain, as the ill-fated pop group Milli Vanilli once sang. It wasn't the reason, but it didn't help the cause as defending Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley World Champion John Mancuso suffered his second DNQ of the 1999 season at the Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, NH. The frustrating part of the situation is that Mancuso will relinquish a points lead that he labored hard to achieve.
"This is frustrating," explained Mancuso. "I don't know what it is, maybe the Rockingham curse. The last time we went into Rockingham, we had failed to qualify at the previous event. The good thing is that we won Rockingham. It sure would be nice if that happened again."
Torrential rain on Friday washed out the single Friday session and that hurt the chances of several teams out there. Mancuso had no luck in his first qualifying attempt on Saturday. He shook the tire violently and then crossed the center line, taking out a cone and eventually coasting through the traps in opponent Ray Price's lane. The defending World Champion appeared to be on a pass good enough to qualify during the evening session until his engine coughed and eventually lost power and slowed to a 7.382, only good enough for first alternate.
Mancuso and his IHRA/Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley team will continue their quest for another World Championship at the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NH., September 24-26. Mancuso, along with each Top Fuel Harley contestant will be afforded three qualifying runs during the course of the event. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA Drag Review Magazine.
