Mancuso Makes Field At IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals, Signs Associate Sponsor For 1999 Season
DARLINGTON, SC-- John Mancuso loves to make a grand entrance and he continued his trend at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals, during qualifying. The veteran Top Fuel Harley rider was on the bump spot going into the final session and inevitably got bumped out of the show, only to click off a very good run that reinstated his status as a qualifier. He also made his first showing with Advantage Trailers as a new associate sponsor.
"The Screamin' Eagle Series has grown to the point that a rider has to have his best efforts when he comes to the line, every time," explained Mancuso. "We were still trying to get back into our groove from 1998 and it took us a few laps to regain our caliber. This will help us to be ready for Bradenton in two weeks."
Mancuso came to Darlington with two bikes, his trusty 1998 scoot and a virtually unproven, new one. He took no chances with the new bike and called upon his reliable ride to do battle. The first run of the 1999 season afforded him the same results as the previous season's inaugural pass. The Houston, Tx.,-based dealer's run was disqualified when he struck one of the timing cones with his foot. His second run wasn't up to his 1998 pace, but nonetheless, was quick enough to make the program. During the final session, he clicked off a 6.881/211.79 to end up in the seventh spot in qualifying. He will be paired opposite Doug Vancil in the first round of eliminations for the rescheduled event on May 8. The event was postponed due to rain.
The team also went into the event sporting the livery of a new associate sponsor. Vantage Trailer, a manufacturer of a aluminum end dump and aluminum pneumatic tanker trailers, have joined the team for the 1999 season. Cliff McWilliams owns the company and is a proclaimed Harley afficinado with a complete fleet of Harley- Davidsons. The company is based in Katy, Tx., a small town west of Houston.
Mancuso plans to run a 19-race schedule for 1999 and likewise plans to defend championships earned under both the IHRA/Screamin' Eagle Banner and ADBA sanction. He continues his 1999 IHRA/Screamin' Eagle title defense at the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., March 26-28. Each contestant will be afforded three qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest eight bikes will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
