John Long Gambles On Tree, Trips Redlight In The First Round
DARLINGTON, SC-- Drag racing is often a gambling sport. Sometimes a driver wins and unfortunately they lose. IHRA Super Eliminator John Long, who is a professional printer from Indianapolis, In., felt that he needed to provide himself with a little more cushion and chose to go for the quick exit from the starting line. Instead, he made a quick exit from eliminations when he fouled against Dan Bandish.
Long entered eliminations in the rescheduled IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals as the third quickest qualifier. He rolled to an impressive 6.281/214.42 during the original scheduled March qualifying sessions.
A lot has changed during those cooler March days. Long admits that his fortunes haven't changed for the better. After breaking two transmissions, struggling with the engine combination, and not even firing the car's engine until today, Long had plenty of reason to be nervous. . Long makes no excuses for his actions, but said, "We've been struggling to find the right combination. I just got anxious to win."
With two weeks before the IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals at Cordova, Illinois, Long and his crew have time to regroup and go at it from another angle. Long is hoping to regain the winning edge.
Long and his Spectra One Motorsports Printing Team plans to continue their championship conquest at the IHRA Amalie Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill., June 18-20. Long, along with each Super Eliminator contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
