Irwindale, Calif. - - The Irwindale Speedway Champions' Award Ceremonies for 2002 will be held right on the premises of the Speedway on Saturday night, November 23. "This is the first time that we've been able to stage this event prior to Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Holiday Season -- We think that this will be a great way to honor our drivers, crews, and workers before they all get caught up in the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years," said track VP Bob DeFazio.

"In years past we waited as long as until the New Year had begun to hold this important event -- This year the memories of the racing season will be far fresher and after the November 23 ceremonies we can then concentrate on the myriad of family things that the holiday season always brings with it."

This year's event, while sometime thought of and referred to generically as a "Banquet", will be so in name only. "Many of the prior attendees told us, that, while a full formal sit-down dinner was nice, the costs associated with bringing an entire team to the event were something of a burden on their budgets," said DeFazio. This event will cost each attendee half of what the tariff was last year ($25 instead of $50).

"We're trying something a bit different, going for a different look and feel, a more streamlined event, staged in a giant 'Hollywood Opening Night'-style structure right here on the grounds Speedway." We'll be done at a very reasonable hour which will give everyone a chance to do some celebrating on their own should they desire to," DeFazio concluded.

The 2002 Awards Event will feature a selection of delicious pre-event hors d'oeuvres (prepared by Twin Palms Catering) and cocktails at 5:30PM, followed by the awards-giving at 6:30PM. Speed Channel regular Pat Patterson will make the journey West to again serve as emcee of the event. "I wouldn't miss this one, Irwindale has produced some of the most competitive racing that I've ever had the privilege of being a part of," said the veteran announcer. A special video looking at the year in pictures will also be part of the night's entertainment.

Winners of the Irwindale Dragstrip "Summit ET Series" will be on hand at the ceremonies as well. All four of those "straightline" champions will be there to accept their laurels on Saturday night along with the Speedway's oval and figure 8 track heroes.

One of the other nice features of holding the event on site at the Speedway is that all of the winners' racecars will be able to be on display. "We plan to arrange them as a welcoming corridor that the attendees will walk through on their way to the celebration. Each of these machines is guaranteed to bring back many memories of one of the most hard-fought and colorful seasons in Irwindale's four-year history.

Another of the benefits of having the event at the Speedway is ease of finding the location (everyone has been there before) and the fact that attendees will not have any problem parking (there are over 2,000 spaces within 100 yards of the structure) and the fact that no one will be required to wait in a long line to "buy" their car back from a smiling valet.

Overnight accommodations for attendees traveling from great distances are available at the official hotel of Irwindale Speedway, the Four Points Sheraton in nearby Monrovia. For reservations and a special Speedway race attendees are urged to call: (626) 357-5211.

Hail to the Champions! The car owners, the top drivers in each division oval and dragstrip, the crew members, the special award winners, the hard working officials, the photogs and scribes, the IS staff, and everyone else who made 2002 such an exciting year.
