There have been several e-mail questions regarding Shirley Muldowney's recent match-race weekend at Norwalk Raceway Park. The following is a brief release about the event.
NORWALK, Ohio -- IHRA Top Fuel standout Shirley Muldowney scored yet another big victory at Norwalk Raceway Park on May 24 when she clocked the quickest and fastest run in IHRA history during a special match race with Doug Herbert. This race was not an IHRA national event, so her elapsed time and speed will not be considered for IHRA performance world records. Muldowney, of Armada, Mich., was paired with defending IHRA World Champion Doug Herbert during the track's Budweiser/Coca Cola Fox Hunt, where she clocked the 4.854 second run at 301.30 miles per hour to win the first round of competition. She followed that effort with a 4.944-second, 299.10 mph pass to win the second and final round of the match race. Muldowney and Herbert represented the professional portion of Norwalk's 'Battle of the Sexes' at the event, which the women won, 10-6. Last August, Muldowney captured her first IHRA national event victory at Norwalk Raceway Park, defeating Herbert in the final round of the Ohio Lottery / AC Delco World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs. Muldowney and Herbert used the Norwalk match race in preparation for the upcoming Prolong Super Lubricants Spring Nationals by Parts Pro (June 6-8), the second of eight IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series events. Muldowney, runnerup to Herbert in last season's IHRA Snap-on Series, is currently second in Top Fuel points to Paul Romine. Romine holds the official IHRA Top Fuel ET performance world record (4.911 seconds, March 1997, Darlington, S.C.), while Muldowney owns the IHRA Top Fuel MPH performance world record (294.98 mph, March 1997, Darlington, S.C.).
