MASTERCAM RENEWS SUPPORT FOR HEDGE & ALEXANDER AA/FUEL DRAGSTER

by Cole Coonce, NR

LOS ANGELES, MARCH 24, 1999 --In a move that underscores the provocative but growing synergy between vintage horsepower and contemporary technology, CNC Software, the developer of Mastercam, has re-upped its contract as the primary sponsor of the venerable front-motored Top Fuel team of Hedge & Alexander. Mastercam is the number one PC-based CAD/CAM system on the planet. Its software is used to design and manufacture all types of parts, including many used in racing. Somewhat paradoxically, Frank "Root Beer" Hedge and his driver, "Wild Bill" Alexander, have been campaigning front-motored Top Fuel dragsters since the days when computer data was stored on punch cards and hard drives were the size of a snack bar.

The arrangement calls for substantial support for the duration of the 1999 drag racing season, which commenced at the Goodguys 40th March Meet, March 12-14 at Famoso Raceway, whereupon the Mastercam fueler took runner-up laurels. In addition to campaigning at Goodguys events, the Mastercam team will also patronize the Arizona-based Pro Nitro series, as well as the four-race Top Fuel Challenge at Los Angeles County Raceway. Special events for the team are plentiful, and include the Goodguys Indy Nationals in June; an 8-car show at Boise, Idaho in August; the Oklahoma Heartland Nationals over Labor Day; as well as dates in Texas and Washington state. The itinerary culminates with the California Hot Rod Reunion 8 in October (an event generally considered the Super Bowl of nostalgia drag racing.)

The team's goal for 1999 is to score a trifecta of sorts; that is to say, they are in serious pursuit of claiming the Points Championship in each of the aforementioned series that features front-motored Top Fuel cars. Hedge & Alexander were able to claim last year's Top Fuel Challenge Points Championship at LACR, an honor that merely whet their appetite for sheer domination in '99.

This will be no small feat, however. The competition in this field is fierce, with a plethora of teams fielded and tuned by some of the sharpest minds in the history of the burning of nitromethane. What makes the challenge further imposing is that many of these teams feature drivers who, like Alexander, are unafraid to drive these radical, unruly machines through the back door with the throttle down...

Both Mastercam and Hedge & Alexander agreed the renewal not only confirms how far nostalgia drag racing has come recently, but also conveys how bullish both parties feel about its continued success and growth.
