TOPEKA, Kansas -- The return of the National Hot Rod Association for a 17th consecutive year, and the first-ever Citgo Bracket Race Series event in Topeka, are just two highlights of the drag racing schedule at Heartland Park Topeka now set for 2005.
A weekend nobody wants to miss, the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX, will be back on its Memorial Weekend date, May 26-29, for a fifth consecutive year . Brandon Bernstein (Top Fuel Dragster), Whit Bazemore (Top Fuel Funny Car), and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) are all defending event champions, and will compete with other well-known drag racers like John Force, Tony Schumacher, Gary Scelzi, and Larry Dixon as part of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
For the first time ever, the Citgo Bracket Racing Series will make a stop at Heartland Park Topeka, July 2 and 3. This big-bucks bracket race will pay out $5,000 to each winner of two sportsman categories.
Heartland Park Topeka will once again host the popular NHRA Division 5 Heartland Championships August 27-28, as part of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Race Series and feature Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars.
Local bracket racers will compete for nearly $50,000 in payouts during the seven-race Heartland Park Topeka Bracket Race Series in 2005. Bracket race series dates in 2005 include April 16-17, May 7, July 23, Aug. 13-14, and Sept. 15. The sixth bracket event (Aug. 14) will feature the National Dragster Challenge, with winners receiving a coveted NHRA Wally Parks trophy. The seventh and final bracket event will crown the NHRA King of the Track Sept. 15.
Two weekends have been set aside for manufacturer-specific racing, including the Fourth Annual Pontiacs at the Park (June 25) and the 16th Annual MOPAR Super Weekend at Heartland Park Topeka (Sept. 30 -- Oct. 2). This is the second consecutive year the MOPAR Super Weekend will be run at Topeka's hometown racetrack.
The VAMP Heads-Up Race Series is expanded to three dates in 2005, including June 26, Aug. 12, and Sept. 24. The VAMP Heads-Up Race Series features street enthusiasts and street-driven vehicles in a competitive heads-up race.
A significant change in the 2005 schedule compared to 2004 is the Heartland Park Topeka Street Legal Series. In 2004, the series was conducted on Thursday nights, but will be moved to
Wednesday nights next year. The Heartland Park Topeka Wednesday Street Showdown is scheduled for 12 dates, with races being conducted the first and third Wednesday from April through September. The Wednesday Street Showdown dates for 2005 include April 6 and 20, May 4 and 18, June 1 and 15, July 6 and 20, Aug. 3 and 17, and Sept. 7 and 21.
Heartland Park Topeka is still in negotiations with various sanctioning bodies to provide additional drag race spectator and participant events in 2005. Information will be released as the event schedule grows.
The 2005 race season at Heartland Park Topeka will begin Saturday, March 19 with an annual technical inspection, followed by a two-hour test and tune, and concluding with a gambler's race.
