GRAND BEND, ONT. - Sometime the mark of a true champion is in knowing how to deal with adverse conditions and defending World Champion Chris Holbrook has seen better days in the Pro Stock Division. But the tireless racer came to the inaugural IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals hosted by the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, ONT., prepared to do battle with a quickly rejuvenating mountain motor Pro Stock division.
Using a Mustang that he once campaigned in Top Sportsman, Holbrook thrashed and put forth an effort that would have made the legends in the division mighty proud. His first qualifying attempt on Friday was essentially to find a baseline, as Holbrook was just out of the field by thousands of a second. Posting a 7.072/200.49 run was respectable and looked as if the team was headed in the right direction.
Saturday's qualifying continued confidence that the defending champion was headed in the right direction. As the numbers crossed the boards for the second run, Holbrook again sat just outside the field with a 6.862/200.80. The team improved the car's performance, but so did the rest of the field.
Going into the final qualifying run in Saturday's Mac Tools Night of Fire, Holbrook reached one more time, but came up short. The 6.865/201.56 pass was just not enough to put the World Champion in the field for the first time this season. The car actually got sideways about the eighth-mile mark, but a determined Holbrook gave the fans a glimpse of driving talent b keeping the car upright. He never lifted.
This marks the first time in 2000 that the defending champion has been a spectator of the first round of final eliminations.
Holbrook awaits the delivery of his new Jerry Haas built Mustang and looks toward the next opportunity to join his comrades at the IHRA Amalie Motor Oils Summer Nationals, June 15-17 at Cordova, IL.
