Las Vegas, NV - The stars of the Goodguys/VRA Top Fuel class will have added incentive to go quick on Saturday and win on Sunday thanks to Mooneyes, USA Inc. In an exclusive sponsorship for the upcoming Goodguys Spring Nitro Classic May 5 & 6 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mooneyes will offer the Low Qualifier in Top Fuel a $500 cash bonus and will offer Sunday's Top Fuel champion an additional $500 cash. Twenty-Five Front Engined Top Fuel Dragsters are expected at the inaugural event.
The first time Goodguys Vintage Drag Racers visited LVMS was October of 2000 and the results for the Top Fuel class were nothing short of spectacular. A total of five 5-second runs were logged at the event with "Radar" Roger Lechtenberg of Cedar Falls, Iowa running the quickest time ever for a front-engined top fueler at 5.870 seconds. Lechtenberg also established an official Goodguys National speed record with a back door blast of 248mph.
Mooneyes, USA Inc. got their feet wet with the Goodguys Top Fuel warriors in March when they sponsored the Low Qualifier at the season-opening 42nd March Meet. "The Low Qualifier Bonus at the March Meet was the best $500 we've ever spent," said Mooneyes USA, Inc. executive Chico Kodama. "We kind of overlooked the fact that the promotion wasn't a weekend-long deal because qualifying is over Saturday afternoon. This time we'll be supporting the Top Fuel racers the whole weekend which should make for some exciting racing!"
At the March Meet, Bill Dunlap, driving Mike Fuller's "Midnight" Donovan-powered entry grabbed the Mooneyes cash with a 6.12 which held up for the top spot. The number is expected to be much lower in Las Vegas according to Goodguys/VRA Director Marc Meadors. "Last year the fuelers really stepped up in Las Vegas thanks to a spectacular dragstrip which features the smoothest surface our racers see all year," he said.
