Charlie Hunt Racing Delivers Two-Car Qualifying Punch At The IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals
Darlington, SC--- With the start of the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship tour beginning this weekend, Pro Stock team owner Charlie Hunt knew that he had his work cut out for him. He decided during the off-season to field two cars instead of just one.The talent level in IHRA's Pro Stock eliminator has increased tremendously in recent years, at best to qualify a single car, much less, two cars in the same field. Team owner Charlie Hunt accomplished that feat this weekend qualifying both of his Universal Brake Parts Racing Ford Probes in the quickest Pro Stock field in IHRA history.
Floyd Cheek joined Charlie Hunt's team in the off-season hoping to improve his chances in returning to championship form. Cheek won the IHRA Pro-Stock championship in 1997 in Alvin Whaley's Ford Probe. Unfortunately for Cheek the 1998 season did not bring the success he had hoped for, Therefore, initiating the move to Charlie Hunt's team with current driver Tom Lee. Floyd obviously has made the right move, his entry is qualified in the number three position with 6.63/208.20. Cheek feels this situation will allow him to return to championship form.
Tom Lee, another Tennessean, has been driving for Charlie Hunt for the last three years. He, unfortunately, has had a much more difficult time of it this weekend. '"Every pass this weekend has been a learning experience," explained Lee. "We finally made some changes to the clutch that made the car launch better. After three sub-par runs we finally made a complete run."
That pass moved Lee into the quickest field in IHRA history garnering the number thirteen position with a 6.70/206.13.
Unfortunately, final eliminations for the 27th annual have been postponed due to rain until May 8, 1999. Each Pro-Stock contestant will be afforded one test run before eliminations.
The next event for the Universal Brake Parts team will be the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla. on March 26-28. Cheek and Lee, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assualt on the Desoto Memorial Speedway racing surface for the second race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Qualifying will begin with two sessions on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at noon on Sunday.
