Cheek and Lee Hope To Rekindle Old Magic At Bradenton. Team Owner Charlie Hunt Remains All Smiles After Darlington!
BRADENTON, FL.-- The two-car, lethal punch of Floyd Cheek and Tom Lee could stand a little deja’ vu. It was only two seasons ago that Cheek bombarded the IHRA Pro Stock contingent for the 1997 class crown. That was the same season that his teammate Lee earned Rookie Of The Year accolades. The defending champion had an “off” season the following year and Lee failed to capitalize on early season momentum gained by winning the season opening 1998 Winter Nationals, formerly contested in Bradenton, Fl.
Both of team owner Charlie Hunt’s hired guns got off to a tremendous start at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals. Cheek qualified in the number three position with a 6.63/208 and is due to meet Tim Nabors in the first round of eliminations. Lee ended up the thirteenth seed with a 6.70/206, and is due to race Steve Speiss in the first round. The rainout date is tentatively scheduled for May 8. Each driver will be afforded one test run before eliminations.
Based on the uncompleted event in Darlington, Hunt is all smiles in anticipation of this weekend’s Amalie Oil Nationals. "We are very confident about our chances this weekend,'' explained Hunt. "Tom and Floyd both recorded career bests at Darlington, we feel very good about our chances this weekend."
The next event for the Universal Brake Parts team will be the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., this Friday through Sunday. Cheek and Lee, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assualt on the Desoto Memorial Dragway racing surface for the second race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Qualifying will begin with two sessions on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at noon on Sunday.
