HERBERT REACHES SEMIS AT BRISTOL BUT CLINCHES CHAMPIONSHIP

Bristol, TN - It was a disappointing but productive weekend for the Doug Herbert's Snap-on Top Fuel Drag Racing team at the 15th Annual IHRA Fall Nationals. The team was low qualifier and won their third IHRA Top Fuel World Championship, but went up in tire smoke in the semi-finals to end their IHRA season.

Coming from the #1 qualifying position with a 5.080 e.t. at over 287 m.p.h (top speed and low e.t. of the event), Herbert got by Jerry Freeman in the first round by running only a 5.43. "We dodged a bullet in the first round with a broken engine - it just stopped and Freeman almost came by me in the lights," said the 27-year-old from Cherryville, NC.

The Snap-on team was forced to change engines for their semi-final meeting against Rhonda Hartman and Herbert had too much power for the sunny conditions at Bristol International Dragway. "I really don't know why it smoked the tires. I was really surprised," said Herbert. "Our car makes a lot of power and sometimes that can get you. Today it was too stout.

Hartman ran 5.18 at 280 m.p.h. to beat Herbert. Herbert and Hartman had raced seven times up to this event at Bristol, with Herbert taking five wins. Hartman eventually lost in the final on a holeshot by Dave Bienemen, 5.20 to 5.21.

This was Herbert's third championship in four years of IHRA competition and also his first back-to-back season titles. Herbert had victories at the Spring Nationals here in Bristol, the Empire Nationals in Rochester, NY and a runner-up at the World Nationals in Norwalk, OH.

"This championship means as much as the others, but it was my first year with Snap-on as a primary sponsor so it's definitely special. I am really proud of my team for another outstanding year and we only look to go out and win more races and another championship next year.

Herbert has even more to be proud of as Gary Bingham, in the Doug Herbert Performance Parts-sponsored Olds Cutlass, won his second Top Sportsman World Championship. The season title went down to this final event at Bristol also. Herbert said, "We are really excited to have back-to-back IHRA championships for both teams. I'm just glad Gary races in another class!
