Brits ready to Break 300mph Records
Final Round Of The Fia European Drag Racing Championship
6th / 8th September 2002
It is the fastest motor sport on earth. And three British drivers are aiming to become the fastest men in dragsters outside of the' States.
Barry Sheavills, Andy Carter and new boy Darryl Bradford will race their 300mph Top Fuel dragsters at the European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, Beds, on 6th-8th September. The championship is at stake and so is the chance to establish a European Record on the ¼ mile track.
The 26 foot monster machines are more powerful than 6 Formula One cars. The 5000cc engines guzzle 16 gallons a mile! And the driver is taken on an eye-ball bleeding acceleration from standstill to 100mph in less than 1 second. Count to five and you'll have passed the 300mph mark.

European Finals Drag Racing
The European Drag Racing Championship also includes 180mph Pro-Stock cars and the hotly contested Top Methanol classes for 250mph dragsters and Funny Cars. Europe's future drag racing champions will also be in action in the Junior Dragsters where youngsters from 8 years old reach speeds up to 80mph.
Throttle stuck at 200mph? No choice, you gotta jump...
The European Finals also includes the last Round of the FIM/UEM European Drag Bike Championship. The 200mph Top Fuel Bikes are so fast that the riders, who literally lay over the monster engine, can be swept off the machines if they raise their fingers off the handlebars. And if the throttle jams open then the rider is faced with the terrifying prospect of jumping from his machine...
Keith Bartlett, Santa Pod CEO, FIA European Drag Racing Promoter:
"Drag Racing is a gladiatorial motor sport. Choose your biggest weapon (engine!) and knock out your rivals to win. You can out-psyche your opposition or blow them off the track. Our spectators want to see duals to the finish line and a hero at the end of the day."
Sportsman classes, Jet Cars, a funfair, bungee rides, helicopter rides, sideshows, music and traders complete the line-up of entertainment.
