EPPING, N.H.-New York native Steve Cossis lost in the first round at the IHRA Amalie Oil North American Nationals at the New England Dragway. The driver of the '53 Corvette Pro Modified sponsored by CompetionPlus.com, lost a close race in the first round of eliminations to fellow Pro Mod Corvette driver, Quain Stott.

Cossis qualified his black Corvette in the No.12 spot for the quickest field in Pro Modified history with a 6.408 at 217.88 mph. His first round opponent, Quain Stott, qualified his '63 Corvette in the No. 5 position with 6.364 at 220.48 mph. The pair of nitrous-powered Corvette's met under perfect racing conditions at New England Dragway on Sunday. Cossis left the line first with the better reaction time, a .470 to a .556, but was unable to hold off the top end charge by Stott. Both cars slowed from their qualifying efforts with Stott taken the win with a 6.38/221 to a 6.53/217 for Cossis.

"I knew that I was going to have to bulb him to win," explained Coss, who resides in Astoria. "However, at the finish, we just didn't win. I guess this is a would have, could have situation. The bottom line is that we got beat this time, so maybe we'll get them next outing."

The last placed Cossis 14th in the IHRA Pro Modified points standings going into the next event, the CARQUEST Autumn Nationals, coming to Rockingham, North Carolina on September 21-23.
