Alcohol Funny Car Driver Scott Weney Drops Tough Semi-final Match At the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals
Leicester, NY - Alcohol Funny Car driver Scott Weney posted impressive runs all weekend at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals. But the stop-and-go luck of the driver went away in the semi-final round, when he smoked the tires and lost in the semis.
Friday's weather caused a stir in qualifying. Weney was in the lanes when a shower suspended the first round session. The atmospheric conditions after the rains didn't favor his combination and he rattled the tires and slowed to a 7.16/134. The run would have put him in the 20th spot, but he by-passed the scales and the run was disallowed.
Saturday morning qualifying was a different story, though. It didn't take much to improve on his Friday performance. But, Weney decided to pull out all the stops and ascended into the seventh spot with a 5.988/238.30 run. He further improved during the final session with a 5.969/239.87. Weney's mile per hour set a new track record and stood briefly as the quickest mile per hour in IHRA Pro Alcohol Funny Car since the restructured rules took effect.
This run put Weney on the ladder as the #6 qualifier, running against David Burch. Weney made short order of the #11 qualifier in round one, by posting a winning 5.956/237.63, again improving his time. Weney also won lane choice for round two with Mark Thomas.
With the holeshot, Weney extended his competition into the semi-finals, running a 5.957/235.89. But that's where the luck stopped. Weney went into the semis against Von Smith. In this heated battle, Weney smoked his tires leaving the line, aborted the run, and watched Smith take the win.
Weney next travels to the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton, MI., July 31 - August 2. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
