Snyder's Day Ends In The Quarter-Finals At The IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals
LEICESTER, NY.-- Larry Snyder entered competition at this weekend's IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals with only one defeat on the season. In spite of fantastic qualifying attempts, Snyder was not on top of the heap this weekend, coming into final eliminations as the #2 qualifier. And going into the second round of competition, Snyder was stopped short in his attempt to win this event.
Snyder opened qualifying at Leicester by battling the same gremlins that plagued him at Cordova. The current points leader stumbled to a 7.414/141.86.
Snyder apparently found a better combination during the second attempt and greatly improved to a 6.214/218.83. The improvement moved him from the 15th spot to the second spot, going into the final session. He came into the final session with even more power than the last go-round and improved with a 6.120/222.66. For the first time in 1999, Snyder was not the quickest qualifier in Super Eliminator. He entered eliminations as the #2 qualifier and was scheduled to meet Terry Munroe in the first round.
When Munroe couldn't make it to the staging lanes, alternate Scott Chamness took his place at the pre-stage against Snyder. Although Chamness left the line just before Snyder, the bright orange Spitzer car drove around him at the end of the track. Snyder took the win light, but lost lane choice to Dave Price in the second round.
With the points race tight, Snyder and Price didn't leave any room for error at the starting line, posting identical reaction times. The side-by-side race to the finish was marginal, Snyder posting a 6.279/215.86 to Price's 6.264/216.27 win. The margin of victory for Price was only .015!
Snyder and his Snyder Motorsports Team plans to continue their championship conquest at the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton, MI., July 31 - August 2. Snyder, along with each Super Eliminator contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
