Emery Disappointed With IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals Outcome, Ends Up First Alternate
DARLINGTON, SC-- Jamie Emery flexed his muscles early during Screamin' Eagle/Top Fuel Harley qualifying at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals, but in the end, his efforts fell less than .03 short. The Colton's Point, Md., based rider went as high as the second qualifying spot during the first qualifying session. He completed qualifying in the first alternate position and will be availble for one of the eight qualified spots in final eliminations should a qualifier not return for the May 8 rescheduled event.
A dejected Emery was upbeat, but disappointed. He explained, "It feels almost as if you got cut on tryouts for a stick and ball team. There are some tough bikes in the Screamin' Eagle/IHRA Top Fuel Harley Series and we are certainly disappointed with our qualifying status. However, we are far from throwing in the towel. Look for better things at Bradenton."
Emery came out for the 27th annual, IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals loaded for bear. While many other of the drivers took caution on the first day of eliminations, he had every intention of cranking out a qualifying capable run during the first session, which landed him in second place following Jay Turner. Emery failed to improve on Saturday and fell to the seventh seed going into the final session. The final session offered no reprieve and, as a result, the team fell to the ninth spot.
The next event for the G&H Jewelers/Jam-On Productions-sponsered, Emery team will be at the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradington, Fla. on March 26-28. Emery, along with the rest of the Top Fuel contingents, will take assault on the Desoto Memorial Dragway racing surface for the second race of the 1999 IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Qualifying will begin with one session on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at noon on Sunday.
