RAIN CANCELS FINAL QUALIFYING AT SOUTHERN NATIONALS
DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Rain forced cancellation of Saturday's final qualifying session in all professional categories at the IHRA Snap-on Tools Southern Nationals, and all fields are set after only two qualifying runs.
The rain came just prior to the start of the Night of Fire session, and lasted for less than an hour. But the sun had already set at Darlington International Dragway, and the lack of sunlight on the track made drying the asphalt surface impossible. The PTS track crew worked until almost 11pm when IHRA officials made the decision to cancel the session. The safety of the competitors was the primary concern, and the combination of wet asphalt and cool temps made the situation untenable.
Because of the cancelled session, Top Fuel competitor Doug Herbert was unable to make the one qualifying run he needed to earn points at this event. Herbert is competing at the NHRA event this weekend in Texas, but flown here today in hopes of making one run to be eligible for the bonus championship points awarded to competitors who compete in all IHRA events.
Tommy Johnson Jr. leads the Top Fuel field with a 4.791 second elapsed time, at 283.31 miles per hour. Luigi Novelli set the track top speed mark with his 300.60 mph run in the second qualifying round.
Chris Holbrook, Shannon Jenkins, Von Smith, Jamie Emery, and Dave Price lead the fields in their professional categories -- Pro Stock, Pro Modified, Alcohol Funny Car, Top Fuel Harley, and Super Eliminator, respectively.
Final eliminations for all classes are scheduled to start Sunday at 12:30pm.
