DARLINGTON, SC - John Montecalvo was a man on a mission at the 2000 Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, SC. The veteran pro stock racer from Center Moriches, NY., qualified on top of a determined field of racers. In a battle of Chevrolets, Montecalvo fell one win short of his second national event victory.

Montecalvo was pleased although he really wanted to win with the Citgo-sponsored, Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

"This was a good day," explained Montecalvo, who finished third in the IHRA pro Stock points standings in 1999. "One loss in a weekend of positives does not ruin a while weekend. My crew worked hard and I'm not going to discount any of the hard work that they did this weekend."

It's no wonder that Montecalvo is proud of the Steven Cultrera-led crew. The veteran driver had an incredible arsenal to work with courtesy of a Sonny Leonard powerplant and the best parts available.

They never fell below the top spot in qualifying. He flexed his horsepower muscles by topping Mark Hay in the first round and continued his intramural domination by topping the Chevrolet of Tim Nabors. Montecalvo advanced to the finals when the Ford of Jon Yoak went red in the semis.

Montecalvo was the favored driver in the finals, but jumped the gun and handed the win to Steve Speiss.
