Cory Mac first shot at IHRA rained out
NORWALK, Ohio (August 29, 2004) -- The good news is that Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Top Fuel dragster qualified sixth in the eight-car field for the IHRA Hooters Drag Racing Series Sunoco World Nationals presented by PPG Automotive Refinish at Norwalk Raceway Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
The bad news is that eliminations for the event have been postponed due to rains that have plagued the race since Friday.
After raining out the second of two qualifying sessions on Friday, McClenathan made good in the one remaining session on Saturday covering the Norwalk Raceway Park quarter-mile in 4.894 seconds at 297.48 mph. This placed the California driver sixth on the final qualifying ladder.
Rains then wiped out "Saturday Night of Fire" eliminations and they were rescheduled for Sunday.
Before the Top Fuel and Pro Modified fields had a chance to run a single round of eliminations on Sunday, the rains forced the IHRA management to end racing today and reschedule the 27th annual Sunoco World Nationals for October 8 and 9.
The rescheduled version of the Sunoco World Nationals will begin with a test-and-tune on Friday, October 8, with remaining eliminations scheduled for Saturday, October 9.
Regarding the rain out McClenathan said, "This Carrier Boyz Racing team must now turn its attention to the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. It is the biggest and most prestigious event on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and the one that every driver wants to win.
"I want to thank everybody associated with IHRA and Norwalk Raceway Park for their hospitality this weekend. On behalf of Andy and Mark Carrier and the entire Carrier Boyz Racing team, we all look forward to returning to Norwalk in October and making a run at putting the Berryman Products dragster in the Sunoco World Nationals winner's circle."
The Sunoco World Nationals marks the first time that McClenathan has competed in an IHRA sanctioned event. When he returns in October, Cory Mac is scheduled to face the No. 3 qualifier, Rick Cooper.
