CORDOVA, Ill. - Von Smith finds himself in a familiar position. The Tennessean is atop the funny car standings, where he finished the last two seasons, but he had to negotiate two huge hurdles to reach that lofty position. Smith had to win at the IHRA's Amalie Oil Summer Nationals and also needed to win two more rounds than Scott Weney, who came into Saturday's eliminations with the points lead. Smith easily was up to both tasks. In round two of eliminations, Smith used a big holeshot to power his NitroFish-Atomic City Tool-sponsored Trans Am past Weney, covering Cordova Dragway Park with an elapsed time of 5.956 seconds at 239.23 mph to a 5.894/239.55 for his rival. His reaction time was a torrid .405 seconds to the .486 for Weney, who fell to the three-time funny car champion for the second straight race. The second part by Smith was just as impressive in ousting Dale Brand for his second straight IHRA tour victory. Smith used a great light again (.416 seconds) and covered the quarter-mile in 5.924 at 238.93 mph. The hard-charging Brand tried in vain to catch Smith, crossing the finish line with 5.989/234.21. Smith was confident of his performance after Thursday's qualifying. He nailed down the top spot in his first attempt with his run of 5.948/236.05 for the number one position and remained there despite sitting out the first run on Friday. He encountered tire shake in the final trial run, aborted, but still went into the eliminations as the number two qualifier. Smith has a month to think about how he'll protect his point lead when the IHRA heads to New York International Raceway Park in Leicester for the July 16-16 CARQUEST Northern Nationals.
