Raybestos Summer Nationals sportsman winners include Lefter, Callahan and Solyan

CORDOVA, Ill. -- T.J. Lefter continued his winning streak in the API-Vic Richards Quick-8 Top Dragster division during sportsman competition at the Raybestos Summer Nationals presented by Parts Plus and Giant-Whitlock, held July 8 at Cordova Dragway Park. Lefter, of Indianapolis, outran Bourbonnaise, Ill. racer Scott Chamness in the final. Lefter ran 6.51 seconds at 206.46 miles per hour to get the win. Chamness went 6.87, 200.35 in the runner-up effort. Dave Price of Norwalk, Ohio was the division's top qualifier, with a low elapsed time of 6.452 seconds and a top speed of 214.28 mph. Middletown, Ohio's Tom Callahan earned the Top Dragster title with a win over Harrison, Mich.'s Roy Holcomb. Callahan went 7.35, 181.78 to Holcomb's 7.88, 167.28. In Top Sportsman, Jeff Solyan of Hermitage, Pa. earned his first victory of the season, topping Ken Langlois in the final. Solyan, driving a 1968 Nova, covered the quarter-mile in 8.06, 154.61, while Langlois had a slower reaction time, but ran 7.53, 183.48. Joe Covert of Saukville, Wisc. was the Modified winner, holding off Doc Bilbrey at the finish in the final. Richmond, Va.'s Anthony Bertozzi earned the Super Stock win over hometown favorite Jeff Stealy, while Lebanon, Ind.'s Marion Stephenson was the Stock winner over Anthony MacDonnell, who left the starting line too early. Rod category winners included Jim Foreman, Boone, N.C. (Quick Rod); Rusty Cook, Cynthiana, Ky. (Super Rod); and Billy Smith, Cynthiana, Ky. (Hot Rod). Ed Hebeler of Savanna, Ill. was the ET Bracket winner, beating Davenport, Iowa's Don Speer in the final round.
