Weney Reaches The Quarter-finals At The IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals
CORDOVA, ILL.--- After posting a tremendous run in the first round of competition at the Amalie Oil Summer Nationals, the demons arose from the sweltering Cordova, Illinois drag strip and bit the fleeting heels of Alcohol Funny car driver Scott Weney in the quarter-finals.
The Spring City, Pa.,-based, chassis builder opened qualifying as the number five qualifier with a right lane run of 6.069/226.51. Weney wrestled the car sideways in the second attempt, and was forced to a 9.22/81.52 shutoff pass. After battling the track's demons, Weney raised his qualifying effort in his last qualifying effort of 5.99/238.72, for the #2 position, and a new Cordova Raceway Park mph track record.
Paired with Howard Poepping in the opening stanza of Alcohol Funny Car competition, Weney got cold luck on a hot track when Poepping experienced severe tire shake. Weney was able to maintain and drive around Poepping for the win with a 6.048/235.80 run.
However, the track bit Weney once again in the second round when Weney, on a holeshot against Jimmy Rector, went up in smoke at the 330-mark. Weenie’s 6.445/202.27 quarter-mile excursion was not enough to take out Rector, who fared better with a 6.096/230.69 run. Weney next travels to the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY., July 9-11. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and another two on Saturday. Final eliminations slated for Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA’s Drag Review magazine.
