Parts Failure Ends Cannon's Winning Streak

CORDOVA, ILL.—(July 5, 1998) It appeared to be about the only way Scott Cannon could get beat. The five-time IHRA Pro Modified champion and current points leader had his undefeated streak of 9 round wins halted when his Lenco transmission exploded during the quarterfinals of eliminations at the IHRA Summer Nationals. The benefactor of his failure was Elgin, South Carolina's David Chambers, who went on to post victory.

"It kind of scared me," said Cannon regarding his explosion. "I have kicked the rods out of there, but never had something that violent to happen before. These things are stuff that you cannot predict, nor can you prepare for. You just have to take the disappointments in stride and keep pushing forward."

Cannon had posted the quickest time in legal Pro Modified history the night before with a 6.396, but was unable to back up the unofficial world record mark with a 6.49 win over John Bartunek in the first round.
